HDMI over fiber: an extender pair or an AOC
For a distant monitor, distinguish separate TX/RX devices from a directional active HDMI cable. Fiber alone does not guarantee format support, power or HDMI negotiation.
HDMI output carrying the confidence content → Optical TX + compatible fiber + RX, or direction-identified AOC → Power and negotiation across the complete path → Monitor HDMI input
Two link architectures
An AOC contains electronics in the cable and must follow its endpoint markings. A TX/RX pair has identified devices and a specified optical medium. Choose an integrated cable or separate endpoints according to maintenance, routing and available connections.
An identified optical example
Lightware HDMI20-OPTJ-TX90/RX90 uses multimode fiber and SC simplex, with transparent EDID. Documented RX power requires an external supply or USB: do not assume the monitor HDMI port powers it. These conditions do not apply automatically to other extenders.
Proposed setup and test
- Identify both endpoint models and revisions, the complete signal format and power. Compare the format with the link table and the monitor.
- Test source and monitor directly. Add the optical route and record power, video and HDCP states separately.
- Check real audio, framing and recovery when powering the destination or switching sources. Transparent EDID is not format conversion.
- Before the show, test the final route and save working settings; review a spare or alternate route for the specific use.
Handling and diagnosis
Do not open modules or look into ports or fibers; follow manufacturer optical safety requirements. With power but no video, compare format and negotiation at both ends. If only the long route fails, investigate that path; a power indicator does not validate the electronics.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reverse an AOC?
Follow Source/Display markings or the manufacturer’s equivalent. Do not assume an active cable works both ways; check before completing the route.
Does an extender add notes or a clock?
It carries the source content. Generate notes and a clock upstream and assign them to an appropriate output.
Is a 4K label enough?
You need resolution, frame rate, color, bit depth and protection details, along with power and optical medium. Distance depends on that combination.
