Rick Case Arena: rigging, floor loads and power in Davie
Rick Case Arena is part of Nova Southeastern University’s Don Taft University Center in Davie, Broward County. Its published venue address is 7200 Mary McCahill Drive, Davie, FL 33314. The institutional footer’s Fort Lauderdale mailing address does not change the arena’s location.
Booking the arena does not approve the setup
This guide covers the arena, not the Black Box Theater, other rooms, other campuses or University School. Arena management lists director, events and operations roles; ask who reviews your plan and each production system.
Rental requests are due at least one month before the event. The stated follow-up is within two business days, not guaranteed approval within that period. Once a request is approved, the contract and policies are provided; review them before assuming equipment, a vendor or an effect is authorized.
External rentals have activity restrictions. The rental page excludes personal parties, weddings and political events, among others, and requires approval for filming. An event in the venue’s history does not establish that every similar request is currently eligible.
Outside groups must carry USD 1 000 000 in liability insurance with Nova Southeastern University, Inc. as an additional insured; vendors need their own insurance. Chartwells’ catering exclusivity does not establish audiovisual exclusivity. Confirm technical staffing, vendors and contract terms separately.

Rigging, staging and flooring have different load limits
These are venue-published reference values, not engineering approval for your setup. Identify points, complete weights, load distribution and system positions on the plan. Do not multiply a single point’s capacity by the total number of points to claim an approved overall load.
| Element | Published reference | Still to be validated |
|---|---|---|
| Rigging | 68 points rated at 2000 lb each; low steel at 67 ft. | Current point plot, combined loads and authorized responsible party. |
| Rigging zones | West End: 32 000 lb; North Side: 48 000 lb, uniformly distributed. | The document lists these under Rigging; do not apply them to a stage deck or concentrated load. |
| Portable stage | 125 lb/ft² (PSF). | Configuration, supports and equipment point loads. |
| Portable basketball floor | Website: 400 lb/ft² for area loads. PDF: 500 lb/ft² for area loads and 400 lb/ft² labeled as point loads. | The figures conflict and the point-load unit needs clarification. Do not reinterpret it as 400 lb total. |
Before moving LED displays, towers, carts or lifts, request limits for the actual floor, the travel route and required protection. An area-load rating does not authorize wheels or small supports. Request a reviewed load-spreading arrangement instead of relying on average total weight.
Agreement between the documents on some rigging data does not confirm point availability or authorize roof access. Motors, hardware, work at height, inspection and removal require agreed responsibilities and procedures.

Assign power and house systems to the event
The guide lists three-phase services but this table does not specify voltage, connectors or capacity reserved for your event. Current ratings alone are not enough to select equipment, calculate usable power or design a connection.
| Location | Website guide | Required confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Near the stage | 1 service at 600 A and 2 at 200 A, 15 ft away; one 200 A service has an isolated ground for audio. | Voltage, allocation, protection, distribution and connection personnel. |
| Outside the dock | 2 services at 200 A; the PDF lists 3. | Actual available quantity and approved power route. |
| Sound and lighting | The guide describes house systems and controls. | Current inventory, operation, permitted inputs and outputs, and external-equipment compatibility. |
Submit system loads and a cable plan for review. Reserve time to check signals, sound, video and control in the event configuration. Sports lighting does not establish dimming capability or suitable camera conditions for a broadcast.

Use the loading access and keep egress clear
The dock is on the building’s northwest side, accessed from College Avenue, with a ramp bay and a dock-leveler bay. The published freight door is 10 ft wide by 15 ft high and leads to the event floor. Public entrances must not be used for loading or unloading.
For other routes, the listed freight elevator has a 5 ft by 8 ft opening and an 8 ft 11 in depth; its rated load is not provided here. Confirm capacity, turning space, cases and operating personnel before including it in your plan. The venue asks clients to bring a ramp: agree on its specification rather than assuming any ramp will do.
Guest parking does not authorize truck parking. Agree on arrival, holding, unloading, testing and removal, and show how exits, aisles, stairs and exterior access remain clear at each stage.
Audience capacity depends on layout. Stage size, cameras, control positions and displays may affect seats and circulation; submit a combined audience and production plan covering accessibility and sightlines.

Recording, effects and public review
Include recording or streaming in the proposal so venue filming approval, organizer conditions and necessary rights can be addressed. Spectator camera rules are not authorization for a professional production.
No specific approval was verified for haze, smoke, lasers, pyrotechnics or spark machines. Provide model, location, intended use and documentation for the venue and relevant authority to determine whether they are permitted. Do not alter detection systems or price the job on assumed acceptance.
Institutional bookings and public permits are separate checks. Ask the arena which Building and Fire reviews apply in Davie and who handles them. The municipal Building portal is a reference point, not evidence of project approval. Do not apply Miami Beach deadlines to this venue.
Also request sound limits, testing hours and pre-opening inspection requirements. Mark unconfirmed items as proposal conditions.

Prepare a proposal with clear responsibilities
You can start without model names: explain what the audience should see and hear, what will be recorded or streamed and what the arena supplies. The technical proposal can then be matched to approved points, access routes and services.
| Party | Required information or decision |
|---|---|
| Organizer | Eligible event format, audience plan, schedule, content rights and approval coordination. |
| Arena | Current plans and terms, technical review, assigned services and required staff or vendors. |
| GLMedia and other vendors | Equipment, weights, loads, interfaces and contracted tasks. |
| Relevant authority | Applicable permits and inspections, separate from the booking. |
GLMedia can rent equipment or prepare, install, operate and remove contracted systems within the agreed scope accepted by the arena. Include sound, video, lighting, cameras and staging where needed; audiovisual technical production does not mean organizing the entire event.
Send any change in plan, weight, power, effects or schedule to the approval contact and confirm the necessary reviews before proceeding. Keep the revision, date and response.
This guide does not establish availability, capacity for a specific setup, approved-vendor status or an issued permit.

Frequently asked questions
Can every rigging point carry 2000 lb at the same time?
The published individual rating does not establish that. An approved plan must account for positions, combined loads and structural restrictions.
Which floor rating should I use: the website or the PDF?
The documents differ. Request the current rating for the installed surface and actual loading condition, including clarification of units. Do not choose the higher value or treat an area-load rating as a point-load rating.
Does an accepted rental request include AV approval?
Do not assume it does. Confirm the contract scope and who approves equipment, connections, staffing, effects and the plan.
Does the downloadable worksheet send a request to the venue?
No. It is a preparation document to complete and review. It does not reserve dates, apply for permits or send information automatically.
