Barco R9802300: throw distance, zoom and focus on a G62

Set image width and check the floating ring on a Barco R9802300 G lens with a G62 projector. Separate throw-distance limits from scaling and focus problems.

Before adjusting the image

Confirm the lens reference, projector model and distance to the screen plane. The menu paths below apply to the G62. Calculated distances still need to be checked at the installation.

Setup and troubleshooting questions

My Barco R9802300 on a G62 will not fill a 4 m wide screen from the planned position. How do I check throw distance and zoom?

First calculate the throw ratio required by that position: lens-to-screen distance divided by image width. Barco specifies 0.65–0.75:1 in WUXGA for this G lens. A 4 m wide image requires approximately 2.60–3.00 m of throw distance. At 3.00 m, the calculation is at the end of the range, with no nominal margin.

Check R9802300 on the lens label and confirm the projector model. Barco lists this lens for G50, G60 and G62 projectors; the menu paths below are for the G62. A matching throw ratio alone does not establish compatibility: the lens family and reference must also match.

  1. Measure from the lens to the screen plane, not from the rear of the chassis. Record screen width, height, available throw distance and signal aspect ratio. Use the same units throughout. At 3.20 m for a 4 m wide image, the required ratio is 0.80. That is outside 0.65–0.75, so this lens cannot provide the required width with its available zoom range.
  2. On the G62, save the current settings and open Installation → Lens → Zoom to adjust image size. Lens Shift changes image position; Focus changes sharpness. If Zoom does not respond, check Lens Lock before suspecting a motor fault. Test during a break in the event and restore the lock if it is part of the operating setup.
  3. Compare an internal test pattern with the actual content. If the pattern fills the required width but the content does not, record the input resolution, aspect ratio and Installation → Scaling setting. The manual lists Auto, 16:9, 16:10 and Native, among other modes. Do not stretch a presentation to conceal an aspect-ratio mismatch: check which part of the image you are trying to fill.
  4. If the pattern cannot reach the required width within the available zoom range, check the distance and installed lens reference. Choose another position or a compatible lens that covers the required ratio. Check the combination in Barco’s Lens Calculator, which warns that lens tolerances can cause differences of up to ±5% between calculated and measured values. Verify the actual image before fixing the projector position. Finish with Test pattern → Off and restore any temporary settings that will not be used during the event.
The center is sharp but the edges are blurred with a Barco R9802300 on a G62. What should I check before adjusting boresight?

Check the lens floating ring and alignment with the screen before adjusting screws. The G62 manual instructs you to set the ring for the lens-to-screen distance before adjusting Zoom and Focus. Adjusting Focus alone can leave this optical correction unresolved.

  1. Record the ring reading and projector settings. Check that the screen is flat and the projector is aligned with it. Carry out the inspection outside show operation; do not look into the lens or work in front of an active beam.
  2. Identify the floating ring using figure 5–4 in the manual: item 2 carries the distance scale; item 1 is the fixed ring. Set the scale to the measured distance. Barco gives the 1.40 mark as the example for 1.40 m. Do not force the ring or confuse it with the lens locking mechanism.
  3. On the G62, select Test pattern → White grid and compare the center, sides and corners. After setting the ring, adjust Installation → Lens → Zoom and Focus for the required image size. If the control does not move the lens, check Lens Lock. Record which areas improve with each adjustment, changing one condition at a time.
  4. If the internal grid is sharp but the presentation is still soft, compare the input resolution and scaling. If the same areas remain blurred on the pattern, recheck the screen plane, projector position and ring setting. An inclined optical plane is another possible cause; the manual covers its correction in section 5.3, Boresight (Scheimpflug).
  5. Leave that mechanical adjustment to someone who can follow the complete procedure with the specified tools. Do not copy screw adjustments from another projector or a UST lens. End the test with Test pattern set to Off, undo adjustments that did not help and check the actual content before continuing the event.

Nominal throw distances for planning the position

Calculated as image width × 0.65 and × 0.75. These are not test results or measured distances. Check the projector, lens and image format.

Check at the installation

Record the lens, projector model and firmware. Note screen dimensions, distance from the lens, initial settings and ring reading. The worksheet is blank so that you can enter the observed results.

Suggested check: compare an internal pattern and actual content without changing the geometry, inspecting the center, sides and corners. Record each adjustment and its result; restore the initial setting when a change makes the image worse.

The menu controls described here apply to the G62 and the linked manual sections. Published optical compatibility with G50/G60 projectors does not make the G62 menu paths applicable to those models.

The manual edition and lens specification sheet do not establish the installed firmware, the equipment combination or current availability. Identify both the projector and lens before making adjustments.
