Questions and troubleshooting

The COLORado Panel Q40 stays dark or changes the wrong color: how do I check its DMX personality and address?

Compare DMX Channel on the fixture with the personality selected in your console. The Q40 offers 4Ch, 7Ch, 11Ch, 16Ch and 23Ch modes. In 4Ch, channel 1 controls red; in 7Ch it controls the dimmer, with red on channel 3. A mismatched profile can therefore change the wrong function or leave the dimmer closed.

For four-zone control with a master dimmer, use the documented 23Ch mapping. The Rev. 8 menu and specifications and the Rev. 2 DMX Chart identify this mode as 23Ch, but the corresponding column on manual page 14 says “26Ch”. Do not create a 26-channel personality from that heading alone. Check the fixture menu and installed firmware before patching.

  1. Save the show, then record the full model, Information → Version, output universe, start address and current personality. Select DMX Channel on the panel and compare its channel count and order with the Q40 chart. A profile for another COLORado fixture may not match.
  2. For whole-panel RGBW control, 4Ch assigns red, green, blue and white to channels 1–4, with no dedicated dimmer. Test red at a low value while keeping the other three channels at 0. In 7Ch, channel 1 must also be above 0; channel 2 is Fine Dimmer, channels 3–6 are RGBW, and channel 7 is Strobe. Record the values sent and the response of the fixture.
  3. For a 7Ch test without flashing, set Strobe to 0: values 0–10 have no function, while 11–255 enable strobing. In 11Ch, also set Color Macro 8 and Auto Programs 9 to 0 to compare direct RGBW control. In 23Ch, Strobe, Color Macro and Auto Programs are on channels 19, 20 and 21. Raising every channel to 255 is not a useful response test.
  4. Check DMX Address against the footprint of the selected mode. The highest starting addresses are 509, 506, 502, 497 and 490 for 4Ch, 7Ch, 11Ch, 16Ch and 23Ch respectively. For example, a 23Ch fixture starting at 100 occupies addresses 100–122, so the next independently controlled fixture can start at 123. Recalculate the footprint whenever you change modes.
  5. In 16Ch and 23Ch, test each of the four zones separately and compare its location with the manufacturer’s drawing. If the expected channel reaches the fixture but a zone still fails, record the zone, color, value and firmware. Check whether that zone also fails in Static before blaming the console profile. The table below summarizes modes and starting addresses; the linked DMX Chart gives the complete channel order.
The Q40 works in Static but ignores DMX or flickers: how do I separate local mode, cabling and W-DMX?

Start with one fixture, a known DMX output and a known cable, isolated from the show chain. Static checks local light output; it does not verify reception from the console. Before connecting the controller, make sure the fixture is ready for DMX and is not in a Master/Slave chain with another panel transmitting data.

  1. Record the address, DMX Channel, Master/Slave Mode and Wireless Setting, plus the console, node and cable path. For the local test, isolate the fixture, unplug its DMX cable and set Receive On/Off to Off. Use Static → Manual Color Mixer to test one color at a low level. If it remains dark, check its condition and messages; changing the console patch alone cannot fix a failure of local output.
  2. For the wired test, return to DMX operation: select Master/Slave Mode → Master, which the menu map identifies as DMX mode, and match DMX Channel and DMX Address to the console. Chauvet warns against connecting a controller to a chain operating in Master/Slave mode. Static or Auto can make the first panel a data source, so separate that arrangement before feeding it console DMX.
  3. Set Wireless Setting → Receive On/Off to Off to isolate wireless reception during the 5-pin XLR test. Send a static look without strobe or automatic programs through a short, known cable. If direct control works but the full chain fails, rebuild it one section at a time and note where the symptom returns. That narrows the search; it does not prove the last fixture added is faulty.
  4. For W-DMX operation, the manual requires the fixture’s DMX cable to be disconnected and Receive On/Off set to On. Pair the receiver with the transmitter. The signal-strength indicator helps check that link, but does not confirm the universe, address or channel values. Compare wired and wireless operation using the same fixture, look and patch.
  5. Receive Reset clears the receiver’s link so it can be paired again. Do not use it during the show or reset a shared transmitter without checking which fixtures depend on it. Follow the instructions for the actual transmitter; reset controls vary. During the wireless test, check obstacles and audience positions: Chauvet notes that water, snow and people can interrupt W-DMX.
  6. If the fault persists, keep the test record, cable and output details, messages and firmware version. Stop using the fixture and contact support for a serious fault. It has no user-serviceable internal parts. Do not open it or apply reset instructions for another COLORado model.

Choose the personality before allocating addresses

Menu and address limits: Rev. 8 manual, page 13. Functions: Rev. 2 DMX Chart, pages 2–3. These references identify 23Ch; the inconsistent 26Ch heading does not establish another mode.

Prepare a fixture test

Record the DMX values and the response of each zone. Confirm physical zone positions against the manufacturer’s drawing rather than assuming they follow the console layout.

Use the blank worksheet to compare Static, direct wired input, the rebuilt chain and wireless control. Save the working configuration and check it again before the show.

Technical documentation

The references list 4Ch, 7Ch, 11Ch, 16Ch and 23Ch. The manual’s 26Ch column heading and the product page’s 22/23-channel discrepancy require care when selecting a profile. If the actual menu or firmware differs, confirm the mapping with Chauvet before using it.

Check the fixture, cable, node and wireless path separately before the show. A successful wired test does not validate W-DMX or establish the cause of a different fault.
