Questions and troubleshooting
NET-X II receives Art-Net but controls the wrong universe. Which number should I compare with the console?
Compare the universe sent over the network with the one assigned to each node port. The console output line, physical port and transmitted universe are different identifiers. On NET-X II, Disp Type selects DEC or HEX; comparing a decimal number with a hexadecimal display can hide a mismatch.
The manual’s Art-net 8-port DMX preset receives universes 0–7; sACN to 8-port DMX receives 1–8. Those are preset assignments, not a rule to add or subtract one on every console. Preserve the show’s mapping if it uses different assignments.
- Save the current configuration first. Record the console and software version, protocol, IP address/netmask, network universe, physical port and destination fixture. Press the NET-X II knob to enter the menu, turn it to select an option, then press to confirm.
- Open Set DMX Port, choose the port and compare Disp Type, Protocol, Network and 1st Universe. Record whether DEC or HEX is selected. Use the exact console manual to check what its output line transmits; do not transfer an MA2 setting to MA3 or Avolites.
- Send a simple change from one universe and observe one output using a known-good fixture, mode and cable. If another output responds, check the map. If the node detects a signal but no fixture responds, follow the port status and function checks below.
The NET-X II display shows a signal, but no DMX comes out. What should I check on the port and protocol?
The signal mark on the main screen indicates detection; it does not prove that the port direction or universe is correct. Turn the knob to view the secondary screen: I means input, O means output and x means disabled. For network-to-DMX conversion, check OUTPUT and the protocol selected for that port.
Repeating a universe may be intentional when copying one signal. If two destinations should show different content, compare the universes they receive as well as their console output lines and physical ports.
- In Set DMX Port, check DMX Status and Protocol for the affected output. DMX Mode set to SINGLE disables Ethernet merging; HTP and LTP merge two signals of the same protocol and require separate checks. Do not enable merge simply to try to restore a signal.
- Record Set IP Mode and Set Netmask alongside the console configuration. Manual IP saves with Enter; Static IP uses the predefined address. Change one setting at a time and check connectivity and transmission against the show’s network plan.
- Before applying a User Preset, save the complete port map: the Art-Net/sACN presets reassign all eight ports. For the DMX splitter presets, the manual says not to connect a network to the product. Do not use a splitter preset as a shortcut for Ethernet conversion.
- Outside the show, compare the suspect output with another output using the same intended assignment, cable and fixture. If the fault follows the cable or fixture, investigate that segment. If it stays with one port, remove that port from operation and prepare a spare. Do not open the node to diagnose it.
If the NET-X II loses its network source, does it hold the look, send zeros or stop transmitting DMX?
On Source Loss determines the behavior. Hold output keeps the last received values; Blackout sets all DMX channels to 000; Stop DMX disables the port. Stopping DMX and sending zeros are different actions. Check each fixture’s manual and signal-loss setting, then test its actual response.
NetWork Timeout is a separate control. The manual limits it to HTP/LTP merging over Art-Net or sACN, with Disabled, 1, 2 or 5 seconds available. With Disabled selected, the node stays locked to the controller even if it stops sending data. Do not treat it as a general recovery time for every mode.
- Record On Source Loss and, when using merge, NetWork Timeout. Select each option with the knob, choose the intended behavior and confirm. Agree on a stable test look and a recovery procedure with the show operator.
- During a rehearsal outside the show, stop the controller’s transmission while leaving the node powered. Record DMX values if a suitable tester is available, port status and each fixture’s response. Resume transmission and note what recovers automatically and what needs intervention.
- Preserve settings and scenes before a reset or update. The menu’s Backup function stores internal configuration but excludes recorded scenes; Factory Reset deletes those scenes. Check Firmware Version against the official update instructions and release information before scheduling an update and a rehearsal.
What each NET-X II reading tells you
| Reading or control | What it indicates | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| Signal mark | The port detects a signal | Expected universe and content |
| I / O / x | Input / output / disabled | Correct direction for the signal path |
| DEC / HEX | Number display format | The same universe the console transmits |
| Art-net 8-port DMX | Preset for universes 0–7 | Show port map and assignments |
| sACN to 8-port DMX | Preset for universes 1–8 | Intended protocol and mapping |
| On Source Loss | Hold output / Blackout / Stop DMX | Fixture response and recovery |
Pre-event test worksheet
Record the port and universe map, one-setting-at-a-time changes, and behavior when the source stops and resumes transmission.
Fill in the worksheet during your test, including readings and fixture behavior.

NET-X II is an IP20 indoor product. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and power, and test output, signal loss and recovery before the show. Internal repair is outside the scope of this guide.
