Questions and troubleshooting

The onAir Panel 1 IP responds to the dimmer but will not change color temperature over DMX. What should I check?

Check the personality under DMX Channel against the console's fixture profile. The 1Ch mode receives dimmer only; color is set in the panel menu. To control CCT over DMX, 3Ch uses channel 2. In 5Ch, CCT moves to channel 3 because channel 2 is Fine dimmer. A mismatched profile can control intensity without producing the color change you expect.

The manufacturer's table assigns ranges rather than a linear conversion from 2800 to 8000 K. It specifies DMX values 090–096 for 4000 K and 202–208 for 5600 K. The 000–005 range does not activate a temperature. These values apply to the onAir model covered by this manual; do not substitute values from another panel.

If the console displays percentages, check the actual DMX output or the CCT attribute in the correct profile. A rounded percentage can hide the value being sent. Store the verified value in a cue and check the look with the camera and agreed white balance. Selecting a nominal CCT does not replace a color measurement.

  1. Record DMX Channel, start address and fixture profile. For a DMX cable connection, select Protocol > DMX512 and DMX Address. For Art-Net/sACN, check Protocol and Ethernet Setting > Universe / Start Channel; changing DMX Address alone is not enough.
  2. During rehearsal, test 3Ch or 5Ch using the matching console profile. Check for address overlap after the change: the highest start address is 510 for 3Ch and 508 for 5Ch.
  3. With the dimmer at a visible level, change only CCT between the documented ranges. In 5Ch, leave Strobe at no function (000–010) for this test. If the color changes as expected, store the value and recall the cue. If it does not, check which channel is actually being sent before investigating the cable or fixture.
  4. If white becomes warmer as intensity drops, check Red Shift. The manual describes this warming behavior when the option is enabled. To compare a constant CCT, test with Red Shift set to Off and record the result.
The onAir Panel 1 IP looks steady to the eye, but the camera shows bands or flicker. How should I test PWM?

Compare the LED Frequency options with the camera and dimmer levels planned for the event. The manual provides 600Hz, 1200Hz, 2000Hz, 4000Hz, 6000Hz and 25KHz. It does not specify one frequency that eliminates banding with every camera or recording mode.

The comparison needs to isolate one variable. If PWM, shutter, intensity and other fixtures change together, you cannot tell which change affected the symptom. Review a recorded clip as well as the live monitor; the conclusion applies to the combination you tested.

  1. Record the camera model, recording mode, fps, shutter, exposure and white balance, along with the panel firmware, CCT, dimmer and initial LED Frequency.
  2. Outside the live program, light a uniform surface with that panel. Turn off or isolate other light sources in the frame and rule out active strobe or Effect Macros. Keep camera settings and intensity fixed while changing one LED Frequency option at a time.
  3. Record an identified sample for each setting. If one option reduces banding, repeat at the planned dimmer levels, through fades and in the other camera modes that will be used. Do not treat untested modes as verified.
  4. If the symptom remains with the panel isolated, compare another unit and retain the clips and settings for support. If it appears only when another light is added, test that source separately. Coordinate any shutter or fps change with the camera operator and repeat the comparison.
The onAir Panel 1 IP stays on when it loses DMX. What is the difference between Hold Last, Stop DMX and Blackout?

Check DMX Loss. According to the manual, Hold Last retains the last received values and continues transmitting them. Stop DMX retains those values on the panel but stops transmitting them. Blackout sets all channels to 000. Selecting Stop DMX therefore does not turn off the panel's own light.

Choose the behavior according to what must remain active during a fault and whether other fixtures use the panel's output. The downstream fixture's loss setting matters too: if it stays lit, that does not prove the panel is still transmitting DMX. Test both ends and recovery.

If a NET-X II holds its output when the network source disappears, the panel may still receive DMX. That is not a test of signal loss at the panel input. Record source failure and interruption of the final cable segment separately.

  1. Record the panel's DMX Loss setting and the loss behavior of the console, node and downstream fixtures. Under Ethernet Setting > Ethernet To DMX, Yes converts the selected Art-Net/sACN universe to the DMX output. Do not infer this routing just because a cable is connected.
  2. During rehearsal, with an agreed cue and no live program running, interrupt the incoming data while keeping power connected. Record the panel light and the response of downstream fixtures. Use Hold Last, Stop DMX or Blackout as required by the contingency plan, without changing other controls at the same time.
  3. Restore the signal and check that the cue and control recover as required. If the response differs from the plan, check whether another source is still sending data and repeat with that segment isolated. Do not start with a Factory Reset: retaining the configuration makes a comparison possible.

Prepare a rehearsal test

Use the worksheet to compare patch, CCT, PWM and data-loss behavior. Change one variable at a time and record what you observe before continuing.

The worksheet is blank: complete it with the actual setup and recorded clips. It does not document a completed test or extend a result to cameras or levels you did not test.

Ranges and menu names refer to Rev.4 (03/2024). Record Disp Ver, Drv Ver and Net Ver under Information and compare the actual unit before changing settings.

Do not connect a console to a chain configured in Master/Slave mode; the manual warns of interference between sources. Review the relevant instructions before installing, powering or using the fixture outdoors.
