Questions and troubleshooting

On a D80 driving J8 or J-SUB, can I use A and B as independent outputs?

Those cabinets require the pair to use 2-Way Active: A/B and C/D are configured separately, but within each pair the signal and settings of A or C are linked to B or D. Both physical outputs of the pair carry its two sections. They do not represent two independent mixes.

In Output, choose the mode required by the connected model and compare it with Speaker setup and Input routing. Dual Channel and Mix TOP/SUB operate differently and use different contact assignments; do not change modes merely to obtain separate control.

  1. Save the configuration and record model, setup, pair, outputs and path to each cabinet. If an adapter or rack panel is unidentified, establish that before sending a signal. D80 central NL8 4 CHANNEL OUTPUT must not connect directly to a cabinet.
  2. If the design requires an Output mode correction, confirm the change with Back or Home. D80 activates the mode and leaves the affected channels in MUTE; check the mode shown on Home and the available setup before releasing MUTE.
  3. During an agreed test window, check the destination of each pair using an agreed signal and level. If it differs from the plan, retain MUTE and correct the patch. Turn off amplifiers before changing power-output connections; restore the saved configuration only when it again matches the connected cabinets.
Does D80 use the same control ports as D12?

D80 distinguishes CAN on RJ45 from Ethernet on etherCON. D12 identifies Remote RJ45 as CAN-Bus/RIB. Check the port label and protocol as well as connector shape.

The official D80 page also separates analog and AES3 inputs from remote control. Document the audio path and the control path before changing cables.

What information do I need to enable LoadMatch on a D80 driving J8?

You need cable length, conductor cross-section and the actual number of connected cabinets. LoadMatch compensates for the electrical properties of the cable without an additional sense conductor. It does not by itself establish why a system loses clarity at low level.

In D80 manual 1.14, open Speaker setup → LoadMatch. Enter Cable length, Speaker count and Cross-section; then use On/Off beside Cable length. Length is entered in 5 m steps and cross-section in 0.5 mm² steps, up to 10.0 mm²; ft and AWG are also shown.

If Maximum gain reached appears, the compensation limit has been reached for those settings. Review the data and cable path with the system technician before retaining the change.

  1. Check the J8 setup, output mode and cabinets sharing that group. Record cable, extensions and adapters before entering data; if the topology differs from the documented one, resolve that first.
  2. Save the initial configuration. Compare the same signal, level and positions, recording whether the response changes and in which area.
  3. If cable data is missing, leave LoadMatch unchanged until the record is complete.
After changing the D80 patch, can I use the previous System check calibration?

Only if that reference still matches the connected configuration. If cabinets, their number or the path changed, verify the system first; comparing against another load can lead to an incorrect conclusion.

D80 manual 1.14 calls for checking connections, listening to destinations separately and then running System calibration. The saved reference allows comparison using System check; a valid file loaded from R1 can also be used.

Record the patch and cabinets with every reference. A calibration taken with a missing section can store that problem as the starting point.

  1. Record setup, mode, destinations, cables and cabinet count. Compare that list with the reference before using it.
  2. Start with all channels in MUTE; enable only the destination being checked, with an agreed test signal and level. Repeat per destination before running System calibration in the System check menu. The check produces audible signals: agree on its timing with the venue team.
  3. Record Calib.:, Check: and Status for each section. If an error or unexplained difference appears, check the affected section. Avoid recalibrating merely to make the check pass.
  4. To interpret Z, consult §17.1.1 of the manual: its values are per cabinet. DC resistance measured with a multimeter is not equivalent to this impedance measurement.
With two J8s in parallel, does an error-free System check rule out a failed LF driver?

No. The D80 1.14 table distinguishes failure types: for J8/J12 it permits monitoring two parallel cabinets for a disconnected cabinet, but the limit for detecting a single LF driver is one cabinet. The table below lists these limits.

If one J8 sounds different, separate the diagnosis by cabinet and section with the system technician, preserving the correct setup and connections. Record the symptom even if the group reading shows no error.

  1. Identify how many cabinets share each output and which fault you want to investigate. Compare that case with the table; do not confuse detection limits with the permitted number of cabinets for powering a system.
  2. Before sending a signal, verify model and patch. Load monitoring reports impedance changes; it does not replace identifying the connected cabinet.
  3. If an unexplained difference remains, record cabinet and section for technical inspection. Do not decide on replacement using distortion percentages published for other models.
The D80 channel is in MUTE: does Load monitoring still supervise the cabinets?

Not while that channel is in MUTE. The manual also excludes monitoring with the amplifier off, in standby or with insufficient pilot level. An error-free reading under those conditions does not establish cabinet condition.

From System check, open LM setup and check Load monitoring On/Off and LM Period. In this edition, the period is adjustable from 40 to 1000 s in 40 s steps; do not expect an immediate response.

Before turning off Load monitoring to clear a warning, record it: that change also resets the error and its message. It does not replace investigating the cause.

  1. First check the calibration reference, setup and actual load. Record MUTE, standby and LM states, plus the exact error text if present.
  2. If checking monitoring during operation, agree on a test window and verify the audio path before releasing MUTE. Record the configured period and the time of each observation.
  3. If the result differs from what is expected, retain the data and review the configuration with the system technician. Do not widen tolerances merely to hide the warning or disconnect cabinets during the show to trigger an alarm.
R1 recognizes D80, but there is no audio: how do I check the analog or AES3 input?

Remote control does not verify the audio path. Check the XLR carrying the signal, Input mode and the source chosen in Input routing for that channel or pair. One input can feed several outputs: for example, A1 can be selected for every destination that needs that signal, respecting Output mode.

In Digital mode, connector 2 receives D1/D2 and connector 4 receives D3/D4: each AES3 link carries two channels. Switching pair 1/2 to Digital disables A1; switching 3/4 disables A3. If an analog signal remains connected there, that change explains why audio is not arriving.

If two or more sources are combined in Input routing and Input gain is not enabled, this edition applies 6 dB attenuation. Select only the intended source during diagnosis before compensating with gain.

  1. Save the configuration and use a known signal to check that the console or processor is sending to the correct connector. From Input, check Analog or Digital for pairs 1/2 and 3/4; do not confuse input numbers with amplification letters A/B/C/D.
  2. For AES3, observe sync status and the source selected as Master. Not locked calls for checking the source and 110 Ω AES3 cable; In sync confirms clocking, not program presence or routing. Sync error calls for checking synchronization between the two digital inputs.
  3. The manual provides for 48 and 96 kHz. If using two independent digital sources, they must be synchronized or have SRC enabled as specified by the design. SRC changes latency: also review system alignment; do not enable it instead of locating an incorrect cable or source.
  4. Once input and routing are verified, check MUTE and destination level. Enable only the pair or channel being checked after setup, load and connections have been verified. If it still does not respond, continue with cabling and cabinet; record the last point where you verified signal.
  5. Returning from Digital to Analog recalls the analog routing saved for that mode. Check it again and restore the original settings if the test does not justify retaining the change.
The D80 shows yellow or red with J8: is the input overloaded, or is a limiter working?

First locate the indicator. Input ISP/OVL and channel GR/OVL describe different points in the signal path. A yellow channel indicator means at least 3 dB of reduction in a limiter; a red channel indicator has several possible causes. The color alone does not identify a damaged loudspeaker.

In Device setup → Levels, watch Input, Output and Gainred/Headr for the affected channel while the indication occurs. Levels also displays impedance and temperature. Record the setup, input and channel pair: with J8 in 2-Way Active, relate the A/B or C/D readings to the two driven sections.

  1. If input ISP/OVL is red, reduce the signal at the equipment feeding that connector and check its meters. The D80 threshold is above +25 dBu for analog or −2 dBFS for digital input. Lowering Level inside the D80 does not correct a signal that already overloads its input.
  2. If the input is not showing OVL but the channel is, reduce the send level and watch whether Gainred falls. Check routing and gain throughout the chain, including boosts in the user EQ. Keep a copy of those settings; do not disable the loudspeaker setup or protections to clear the indication.
  3. Red channel OVL can indicate an internal signal above −2 dBFS, internal EQ filter overflow, 12 dB or more of gain reduction in a limiter, or limiting caused by output peak current above 70 A. These values describe D80 indicators, not operating targets.
  4. If Channel mute shows an exclamation mark, read and record the message in Channel view. If an error or distortion remains with a reduced send, leave the pair in MUTE and check that section before resuming. Switch off the amplifiers before changing loudspeaker connections.
  5. Repeat the passage during a soundcheck window at an agreed level. Compare the indicators before and after each change and note their duration. Clearing the red indication allows diagnosis to continue; it does not by itself prove adequate coverage or confirm that every driver is healthy.

Checks before the event

Compare the rack patch with the control and audio plan. Record pair configurations and destinations; then verify the intended path with the system technician.

If a cabinet, mode or cable changes, repeat the check on the affected section.

For System check and LM, also record the reference, cabinet count per output and channel state. The supervision record separates calibration, check and operating observations; all fields are blank.

Technical documentation

Confirm the actual rack model, input configuration and installed firmware. The channel table does not replace checking compatibility with the exact cabinet.

The steps correspond to manual edition 1.14. Check System check/LM configuration and the connected load before interpreting a result.
