Questions and troubleshooting

In a J8 array, what changes between LINE and ARC, and how do I choose the setup?

Choose the setup to suit the curvature of the section. LINE reduces the mid/high range relative to ARC to compensate for the extended nearfield of long-throw sections. The manual specifies it for three or more consecutive splay settings of 0° or 1°. ARC is intended for curved sections; both setups can be used in the same array.

For horizontal coverage, also check whether each position contains a J8 or a J12, as explained below. Manual 2.2 does not give a single attenuation value in dB to reproduce with an equalizer. Use the model-specific setup and the design; do not replace it with a fixed EQ correction.

  1. Compare the design angles with the assembled array and record which cabinets share each channel pair. The LINE/ARC transition must also accommodate the wiring groups, with up to two cabinets per pair in these setups.
  2. Check the full setup name on the amplifier and identify the section it feeds. Choosing LINE just because a cabinet is at the top, or ARC because it is at the bottom, can give a section a different response from the design.
  3. During soundcheck, walk the near, middle and far listening areas with the same signal and note where the balance changes. If the setup and angles match the design but the difference remains, continue with coverage, CPL and HFC in this guide. Save the configuration before changing it; do not raise gain to compensate for missing mid/high energy without identifying the cause.
Can I run a J8 from a single amplifier channel?

J8 requires 2-Way Active on a correctly configured d&b amplifier. The table allows two cabinets per channel pair with J8 Line/Arc and one with J8 AP. AP requires ArrayCalc data transferred through R1 to a compatible amplifier.

Identify the amplifier, setup and cabinet wiring before connecting it. The number of visible connectors does not indicate the number of independent channels.

Can I use different CPL values within a J8 array to correct individual listening areas?

The manual requires the same CPL setting for every cabinet in an array. CPL compensates for coupling by reducing low and mid frequencies; its use is recommended from five cabinets, with attenuation from 0 to −9 dB. The correction starts gradually at 2 kHz and reaches its maximum below 100 Hz. Increasing attenuation lowers the transition frequency.

Compare several listening positions when choosing a value. If excess low or mid energy appears at only one position, record it before changing the whole array.

  1. Save the starting settings and record CPL for each channel pair. If values differ, check them against the design with the system technician.
  2. Use the same test signal and level at the center, sides and rear. If another CPL value is agreed for testing, keep it uniform throughout the array and repeat the observations. Judge the result across the listening areas, rather than at one position alone.
With J8 outdoors, when should I use HFC1 or HFC2 if high frequencies are weak at the rear?

HFC compensates for high-frequency absorption in air. For J8/J12, the manual specifies HFC1 for cabinets covering distances beyond 40 m and HFC2 beyond 80 m. These references assume 40 % relative humidity; lower humidity calls for shorter distances.

Apply HFC selectively according to where the cabinets are aimed. These references alone do not determine the event's settings.

  1. Record the distance to the covered area, observed humidity, setup and cabinets sharing channels. First check that the configuration and aiming match the design.
  2. Compare the distant position and other areas covered by that group, keeping the signal and level constant. If rear clarity improves while another area becomes worse, review the coverage distribution before retaining the change.
J8 sounds clear at FOH but changes in the front row or at the sides. What should I check?

Compare actual coverage with the design before equalizing. J8 and J12 have nominal horizontal dispersion of 80° and 120°; the manual states that nominal dispersion is maintained above 300 Hz and 200 Hz respectively.

Check the listening areas with the same reference, including overlap between the array and fills. If the change occurs toward a side or across that transition, record the position and check which systems reach it.

  1. Confirm each section's model, fill destinations, channel grouping and LINE/ARC setup. Compare these with the project; any mechanical change must be handled by the person responsible for the assembly.
  2. If only distant positions lack high frequencies, follow the HFC question. If excess low/mid energy repeats across several areas, check CPL. If the difference is confined to one position, investigate that section before changing the whole mix.
A J8 loses low or mid/high output. What wiring checks should I make before equalizing?

Check 2-Way Active mode, the J8 setup and the signal path for both ways. LF and MF/HF enter the cabinet through different contacts; a cable or adapter can leave one way unpowered even when its connector fits.

On D80, the central NL8 «4 CHANNEL OUTPUT» is intended for a rack panel, multicore or breakout. The manual prohibits connecting a cabinet directly to it because damage may result. The cabinet pin map below is not the map for that output.

During preparation, isolate the affected section with a controlled substitution. If the symptom changes when only a cable is replaced, check that cable and its adapters. If it persists, continue toward the output and cabinet with the system technician, without bypassing protection.

  1. Save the patch and setup. Identify the amplifier output, panel, multicore, breakout, cable and J8 connector variant; follow the entire path.
  2. Before checking continuity, turn off the amplifier and disconnect the cable at both ends. Have a competent technician compare every conductor, including adapters, with the cabinet and output manuals.
  3. Once reconnected with the setup verified, test with a known working compatible cable at a suitable test level. Change one section and record whether the missing way returns. Do not boost EQ to compensate for an absent way.
With J8 and J-SUB, when should I use CUT, and what should I check if low frequencies are missing?

CUT reduces the J8's low-frequency output for use with J-SUB or J-INFRA. TI 385, edition 10.4, recommends J8 in CUT with J-SUB in standard mode for more low-frequency headroom. It also documents J8 without CUT and J-SUB in INFRA when extending the response takes priority over that headroom. Use the combination specified in the design; the label «Infra Sub» does not identify a J-INFRA by itself.

The J8/J12 manual 2.2 specifies a −5 dB response of 48 Hz–17 kHz in standard mode and 85 Hz–17 kHz in CUT. The 85 Hz value describes that response; it is not an adjustable crossover value to enter in the console. CPL serves a different purpose: compensating for array coupling.

  1. Record CUT, CPL and the top setup, along with the subwoofer model and mode. Save the starting state before comparing settings.
  2. At a test level, listen to or measure tops and subwoofers separately. If the subwoofer produces no signal, follow its input, mute, setup, amplification and wiring before boosting top EQ.
  3. Compare both systems together at several positions. If the loss occurs only when they are combined, record the position and review alignment, polarity and the signal path with the system technician. CUT does not determine the delay between tops and subs.
  4. If another combination is agreed for comparison, keep the reference signal and level, change one variable and repeat the positions. Restore the saved state if the overall result does not improve or the setting does not match the design.
Can I use J8 AP with two cabinets linked to the same amplifier channel pair?

No. J8 AP requires a dedicated amplifier channel pair for each cabinet in 2-Way Active. The manual's table allows up to two cabinets per pair in J8 Line/Arc, but only one in J8 AP: each cabinet receives its own processing. Wiring used for two cabinets in Line/Arc must be reviewed before switching to AP.

TI 385, edition 10.4, documents ArrayProcessing for J Series with D80 and 30D. An amplifier's ability to power J8 in Line/Arc does not establish support for J8 AP. For another model or revision, check compatibility and firmware in its documentation.

AP data are calculated in ArrayCalc and transferred to a compatible amplifier through R1. According to the J8/J12 manual, transferring the data automatically activates the AP setup; do this during preparation after checking the patch.

  1. Save the project and starting settings. Record the amplifier model, firmware, and ArrayCalc and R1 versions; check them against the system you will use.
  2. Number cabinets in the same order as the design and assign one channel pair to each J8. Make sure no second cabinet remains linked to that pair and that the panel, multicore and breakout keep both ways at their intended destinations.
  3. Turn off the amplifiers before changing power-output connections and follow the output and cabinet pin maps in their manuals. Do not connect a J8 directly to D80's central NL8 «4 CHANNEL OUTPUT».
  4. Check actual cabinet count, order, geometry and patch against the ArrayCalc project before transferring data through R1. Confirm J8 AP and the cabinet-to-pair mapping; a completed transfer does not prove that physical wiring is correct.
  5. With the setup verified, check signal and both ways of each cabinet at a test level. If a position does not respond, stop and follow its assignment, output and wiring. When returning to Line/Arc, restore the project and patch intended for that mode; do not leave mixed configurations unchecked.
J8 and J-SUB produce low frequencies separately, but combining them reduces level. How should I check alignment?

Compare top and subwoofer arrival at a reference position, then check other listening areas. TI 385, edition 10.4, specifies ArrayCalc when the geometry and signal-chain latencies are known; when those data are insufficient, acoustic measurement is required. There is no fixed J8/J-SUB delay suitable for every placement.

Section §11.1.1 warns that an automatic impulse-based delay finder alone does not solve alignment between an array and a subwoofer, because they cover different frequency bands. Its reference procedure uses the array and a full-range cabinet placed on top of the subwoofer, such as a nearfill, to determine the setting. Prepare that comparison and reference placement with the system technician.

  1. Save the configuration and record positions, system modes, input, polarity and applied delay. First verify that both J8 ways and J-SUB receive the intended signal; this question assumes the systems do produce signal separately.
  2. Choose and record the reference position; the TI allows FOH. When measuring, record the microphone, reference and parameters. Compare captures at the same position with the same time reference so a measurement change is not mistaken for a system change.
  3. Check ArrayCalc or measurement results against the delays actually applied. If outfills are present, mute them to check the main-array/subwoofer crossover, as specified in §11.1.3.
  4. Test the calculated setting with tops and subs together at a test level, then repeat at near, middle and distant positions. Record improvements and losses. If the main-array delay was changed to align it with another array, also review its relationship with the SUB array.
  5. If the result is not consistent, restore the saved values and review geometry, modes and latencies missing from the project. Do not boost EQ to conceal a loss that appears only when systems are combined.
Can I use different inputs or channel delays to correct one J8 column?

Amplifiers feeding one column must receive the same input signal. If the whole column needs delay, TI 385 §11.1 requires the same added delay setting on all its channels. Adding delay to only some cabinets breaks that condition; a local correction requires a design review, rather than independent delay experiments during the event.

This concerns alignment delay added to the column. ArrayProcessing calculates individual cabinet filters; do not replace its data or manually equalize its filters to satisfy the common-delay rule. Review the AP project separately from the system's input and alignment settings.

  1. Follow the patch from the console or processor output to every amplifier in the column. Record the signal feeding each section and whether a route introduces different processing or latency.
  2. Compare added delay values on every channel feeding that column. If they differ, check the design and saved file before changing them.
  3. With AP, check cabinet order and data transferred through R1. Keep the dedicated pair for each J8; do not reassign channels to correct a timing setting.
  4. If a whole-column delay change is agreed, apply the specified value to all its channels and repeat listening or measurement with fills and subwoofers. Save the validated setting or restore the starting configuration.

Checks before the event

Save the starting configuration and agree on near, middle, distant and side positions with the system technician. Use a known signal at a test level suitable for safe work; the manual warns about high sound levels near cabinets.

Record date, actual geometry, environmental conditions, setup, CPL and HFC by group. For measurements, record instrument, microphone position and measurement parameters; indicate when observations are listening only. Change one variable at a time, repeat the positions and record improvement as well as any area that becomes worse.

For a way-by-way check, also record the output, adapters and disconnected-cable continuity. This page does not provide instructions for opening or repairing cabinets or amplifiers.
