Questions and troubleshooting
Shure QLXD4 shows RF but no audio. Is it linked to the correct transmitter?
Check the blue RF LED as well as the bars. The bars show received energy and may respond to interference; the blue LED indicates an active transmitter link. Neither replaces an audio check. If the audio meter does not respond to speech, trace the path from microphone to receiver before raising the console level.
- Outside the live program, record the band, frequency, assigned transmitter, encryption and gain settings. Power on only that channel’s transmitter and check that the band labels match. When two transmitters share one receiver, Shure specifies operating one at a time.
- Watch the receiver with that transmitter off, then on. RF bars that remain with it off may indicate another transmission. If the blue LED does not appear when it is on, check band, frequency and synchronization. Do not run a scan that changes the RF plan during the event.
- With the blue LED active, speak at the expected performance level and watch audio, OL and TxOL. TxOL means the transmitter input is overloaded: reduce the signal from the microphone or instrument. OL indicates the receiver limiter. They identify different overload points.
- Compare with a known working compatible transmitter, one at a time and with its IR sync. For a QLXD2, identify the capsule before swapping it; for a QLXD1, identify the microphone and connection. Note whether the fault follows that component or stays at the receiver. If audio does not recover, use the rehearsed backup and refer the equipment for service.
QLXD4 shows FAIL or Err.003 when I synchronize a backup. How should I check encryption?
Record the full message. Sync fail calls for another attempt at IR alignment; Err.003 identifies an encryption-mode mismatch. A key mismatch also requires IR sync. Manually matching frequency does not transfer the AES-256 key.
These steps cover QLXD4 with compatible QLX-D transmitters. Keep the encryption required for the event; disabling it is not part of this procedure.
- Check the key icon. To create an encrypted channel, press menu until Encryption appears, select on with the arrows and save with enter. Changing from OFF to on generates a new key, so transmitters using the previous key need to be synchronized again.
- Power on the assigned transmitter, press sync on the receiver and align the IR windows less than 15 cm apart. The red IR LED changes from flashing to steady when aligned. Wait for the success message, then check the transmitter key icon, blue RF LED and audio response.
- Synchronize and test each backup separately with the same receiver, switching off the previous transmitter before powering on the next. If the error returns, record the exact model, band, firmware and code. Do not apply this QLX-D procedure to a mixed-family combination.
- Before considering an update, compare firmware on both devices. The manual requires transmitter and receiver to use the same version; networked receivers must at least match MAJOR and MINOR versions. Prepare updates outside show time. Updating alone does not prove the fault is resolved.
The QLXD4 audio meter responds, but the console signal is missing or wrong. What should I check at XLR and MIC/LINE?
Check the output in use, the cable and the actual console input. The rear MIC/LINE switch affects only XLR: MIC attenuates it by 30 dB compared with LINE. A line input may receive too little level with the receiver set to MIC; feeding LINE into a microphone input requires checking that input’s headroom.
XLR is balanced. The 1/4-inch (6.35 mm) output is impedance balanced: Tip carries audio, Ring carries no audio and Sleeve is ground. It is not a stereo pair. Ethernet provides QLXD4 networking and control; it is not a Dante audio output.
- With the channel removed from PA and monitor feeds, note MIC/LINE and receiver gain, then confirm the destination input type in its manual. Prepare the console level before moving the switch: changing from MIC to LINE raises XLR output by 30 dB.
- From the receiver home screen, the arrows adjust gain in 1 dB steps from −18 to +42 dB. The factory 12 dB setting is a starting point, not a required value. Test at performance level while watching the meter and audio LED, and reduce gain if you hear distortion.
- Use the same spoken phrase to compare the receiver meter with the console input meter and PFL. If the receiver responds but the input does not, try a known working cable and input, changing one part at a time. If signal reaches PFL but not the destination, follow mute, assignment and mix routing in the no-audio microphone guide.
- If TxOL appears, return to the transmitter rather than trying to correct an overloaded input with output gain. If the fault stays at the receiver with the rest of the path checked, remove it from service and use a prepared backup. The meter alone does not certify that the analog output works.
Separate RF energy, transmitter link and audio
| Indicator | What it tells you | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| RF bars | Received energy, which may include interference | Compare with the assigned transmitter off and on |
| Blue RF LED | Active link with a transmitter | Identify the transmitter and check audio |
| Audio meter | Audio level at the receiver | Compare with the console input |
| Audio OL | Receiver audio limiter active | Check gain and distortion |
| TxOL | Transmitter input overloaded | Reduce the signal feeding the transmitter |
| Err.003 | Encryption-mode mismatch | IR-sync the compatible transmitter and receiver |
Checks before the event
Record the channel and backup settings first. Change one section at a time, note the result and check the final state before returning to program.
