Indiana Convention Center: rigging, floors and services in Indianapolis
Indiana Convention Center (ICC), in Indianapolis, shares a Facility Guide with Lucas Oil Stadium (LOS). These are separate facilities within ICCLOS: identify the building, hall or ballroom and contracted configuration before applying a specification.
Which guide and plans apply to your installation?
The official planner page links the Facility Guide, marked revised 04/2026 on the back cover. This is production documentation; visitor maps and sales brochures do not replace review of loads, labor and services. Use sections labeled ICC rather than stadium capacities.
The official website announces the expansion and Signia Hilton Indianapolis for December 2026. Physical opening and the technical package were not verified. Do not apply existing-hall references to those spaces: request drawings and handover conditions applicable to the event date and contract.
Who installs rigging, and what needs approval?
The guide and labor-policy page require union labor hired through ICCLOS. The Sound & Lighting section covers installation, rigging, operation and removal of AV, screens, cameras, scenery and other equipment, including unloading and lift operation. Confirm the exact division of work with the Event Coordinator.
Labor jurisdiction does not establish exclusive equipment supply by a provider. Define supply, labor, supervision and operation in the contract. Any exception requires specific acceptance; do not assume it applies to a touring crew.
The reviewed sections do not provide a suspension grid with allowable loads for your design. Submit points, equipment and accessory weights, truss, motors and load distribution. Request the approved grid and appropriate review. Columns are not available attachment points: the guide prohibits attaching materials to them.
Which floor loads does the guide publish?
The ICC Floor Loads table gives area-specific references in PSF (lb/ft²). These are not point, wheel or leg loads. Review the installation and route using total weight, actual distribution, support contact area and protection.
| ICC area | Published reference | Application to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Halls A–C and F–K | 500 PSF. | Exact location, supports and route. |
| Halls D–E | 350 PSF. | Do not apply the other halls’ reference. |
| Swing Space | 500 PSF. | Contracted use and load-in/load-out sequence. |
| Sagamore Ballroom, sections 1–7 | 100 PSF. | Design loads and circulation. |
| First- and second-floor meeting rooms and public areas | 100 PSF. | Review each surface and movement. |
How are electricity and connections assigned?
The Electrical Service section describes the following references for the existing building. It does not establish simultaneous availability or spare capacity. Submit circuit demand and request identification, voltage, phases, connectors, protection and cable routing.
Connections to facility systems, including sound, video and utilities, must be made by ICCLOS personnel. User-supplied extension cords require venue electrician approval. Standard room lighting is not show lighting.
| Location | Guide reference | Confirm before use |
|---|---|---|
| Exhibit hall floor pockets | 100 A, 208 V, three-phase, or 6 services of 20 A, 120 V. | Actually assigned service and circuit; do not add both options together. |
| Alternating exhibit hall floor pockets | 100 A, 480 V, three-phase. | Location, protection and any required transformation; do not directly connect lower-voltage equipment. |
| Meeting rooms | Average of 3 single-phase lines of 20 A, 120 V. | Actual count, shared use and accepted demand for the specific room. |
Which production and control network may be used?
The guide and official list identify an exclusive Internet and data provider. The text restricts unauthorized wireless networks and devices in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands; do not assume your router, Mi-Fi, printer, AV link or wireless control is accepted.
Submit the network plan, devices, frequencies and streaming or control requirements to the venue and service lead. Request an accepted solution and test bandwidth, stability and recovery. Guest Wi-Fi does not establish a reserved production connection.
How are unloading and the indoor route arranged?
The ICC public address is 100 South Capitol Avenue. Shipping/Freight specifies 5 South Missouri Street on the west side for deliveries to the general service contractor/decorator. The guide also distinguishes meeting-room shipments via Hall G. Confirm the receiver, dock and route for the specific shipment in writing before dispatch.
The venue does not accept general show freight on your behalf. The contractor/decorator must be present and delivery must match contracted dates; early delivery may be refused. Personally owned vehicles are not permitted on the docks under the guide.
Coordinate a freight or service elevator for the second floor; the guide prohibits forklifts there and in carpeted areas. Verify cab, doorway, allowable total load and all passages and turns. A door dimension does not establish the complete route or floor capacity.
Which configuration and changes must be documented?
The guide states that published seating capacities do not deduct staging, AV, columns or other obstructions; room capacity requires Indianapolis Fire Department approval. For planning, submit a layout showing stage, LED, control positions, aisles, exits, accessibility and safety equipment.
For two-tier exhibits, the guide requires detailed plans submitted to the venue 60 days before the event and written acceptance before move-in. Confirm engineering and authority reviews for the actual project. Also agree on a single room-setup submission schedule: the initial-setup section contains timing references that need clarification with the coordinator.
Maintain version control and change responsibilities. Room setup and changes use venue labor and may incur additional charges; available furniture does not authorize the client to move it independently.
How do ICC effect rules differ from stadium rules?
The pyrotechnics policy has separate sections. For ICC it prohibits pyrotechnic effects except the defined Flash Pots exception, limited to non-trade-show settings in exhibit halls and ballrooms. That exception has its own documentation and conditions; it is not automatic permission and does not extend to every cold spark device.
Do not use LOS pyrotechnic conditions to justify an effect in ICC. The reviewed sections do not resolve approval for your show’s haze, fog or laser. Submit equipment data, location, exposure and detection impacts for venue and competent-authority review. Production personnel must not alter alarms or detectors on their own.
Frequently asked questions
Can I divide total weight by the floor area and consider the floor approved?
No. The guide distinguishes floor loading from wheel loads and warns that a loaded forklift does not distribute weight equally. Request review of supports, wheel spacing, actual load, route and protection; a room-wide average does not validate a local concentration.
Do venue microphones include installation and operation?
The guide lists 3 non-wireless microphones among equipment subject to the agreement and availability. Installation incurs a labor charge. Confirm inventory, reservation, operation and interfaces; this is not a complete AV package.
Can I ship a box or pallet to the Business Center without coordinating?
No. Small-package handling and general freight have different conditions. The website and guide list different package weight limits; obtain current confirmation of the item, carrier, address and receiver. Do not assume the Business Center accepts pallets.
