Los Angeles Convention Center: rigging, structures and haze/laser review
Los Angeles Convention Center is at 1201 S Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, California. The currently linked Event Planning Guide distinguishes exhibit rigging, production and room-specific exclusive services.
Who installs flown truss and supported systems?
Exhibit rigging requires a listed LACC contractor and a single approved provider for the event’s non-production scope. Production in halls other than Petree/Concourse also uses authorized contractors; production in Petree/Concourse is exclusive to Encore. Rigging from catwalk structures is prohibited.
The rigging contractor must also install supported systems with any suspended portion or motorized/manual self-climbing truss. Submit fixed points, WLL, complete weights, reactions and trim on the correct CAD. Review room or system changes and provider assignment before proceeding.
Does rigging acceptance include floor, structure and electricity?
No. Separate point review from temporary-structure design and applicable LADBS permits. The venue’s temporary-structure procedure uses 1301 S FIGUEROA ST for applications; do not substitute the public address without confirming the process. Prepare drawings, engineering and inspection sequence before building; this guide does not process permits.
Select electrical/utility contractors from the authorized list. Confirm voltage, phases, current, connector, distribution and energization responsibility; the current hub identifies Boldyn Networks for internet/telecom. Obtain area-specific floor limits and protection for bases, ballast, wheels and lifts; supported truss does not remove that check.
How are haze and lasers presented to LACC?
For fog/haze, submit effect scope/density, locations, machine models/counts, fluid/SDS and rehearsal/show dates and duration. LAFD requires a detection-interaction check; the guide requests scheduling at least 48 hours ahead. This schedules a test, not automatic acceptance or evidence of a completed test.
For lasers add full beam path, mirrors, targets, electrical power and cooling. The guide requires a demonstration before opening and avoids targeting occupied areas. Confirm current federal and operating documents with LAFD; guide wording does not replace current procedures. Without acceptance, retain a no-emission sequence.
Frequently asked questions
Which temporary structures require engineering submission?
The Temporary Structures appendix includes structures/video walls over 12 ft, two-story structures, live-load stages/platforms over 30 in, steps over 48 in, and expansive one-story structures of 15 ft or more with heavy overhead elements. It requests an isometric drawing 30 days before move-in and California-licensed stamped engineering two weeks before move-in. Confirm classification, LADBS schedule and event review; these thresholds do not exempt smaller structures from stability checks.
Can an effect change be handled only at the console?
Not if it changes accepted machine, fluid, density, aim or hours. Resubmit the scope and coordinate the new check with Event Services/LAFD. Do not adjust or bypass detection yourself.
