SDI and HDMI for monitors: conversion, scaling and format
Separate three questions before connecting a source to a monitor: what signal leaves the source, what the destination accepts and whether the interface or the format must change.
HDMI laptop or processor SDI output → Converter in the correct direction; scaler only when documented → Configured output and compatible transport → Monitor with verified input and format
Show scenario: the source works, but this monitor rejects it
A camera or laptop working on another display does not validate the confidence path. Record resolution, exact frame rate, progressive or interlaced scanning and port. Do not treat 59.94 and 60 Hz as the same setting.
Two common show connections
To feed an SDI system from an HDMI laptop, the converter must receive HDMI and provide an SDI format accepted by the next input. First establish whether interface conversion is enough or whether scaling or frame-rate conversion is also required.
For an SDI camera and an HDMI monitor, use the opposite conversion direction. Test the camera on a known SDI input, then add the converter and monitor. If the monitor rejects the received format, use a documented adaptation function; another cable does not add that capability.
Choose the function before the model
| MD-LX | Documents SDI/HDMI routes and 3G Level A/B conversion; these modes are not evidence of scaling. |
|---|---|
| MD-HX | Documents scaling and frame-rate conversion. Match serial prefix and firmware: documentation differs between generations. |
| Blackmagic BiDirectional 3G | Supports simultaneous conversion in opposite directions. Different formats on the two inputs do not mean either input can be scaled to any output format. |
| HDMI destination / SDI segment | Check EDID and HDCP at the relevant interfaces; SDI does not negotiate EDID. Bypassing content protection is not a proposed solution. |
Proposed setup and test
- Agree on a format supported across the path. If adaptation is required, verify that function in the exact model.
- Test the source directly and the processor pattern separately. Record the format detected at each receiver.
- Add the converter and check input selection, routing and the physical output used; a loop may retain the input signal.
- Play text, a circle, motion and speech; check aspect ratio, crop, channels and sync. Remove patterns and verify real content.
Diagnose while preserving the starting settings
If the pattern works, move upstream to the source and its selection. If it also fails, test a known short connection and correct power. Missing audio calls for channel and pair identification, not random video changes. Rehearse format changes off program.
Frequently asked questions
Does changing EDID convert the signal?
EDID reports capabilities to an HDMI source. It does not add a scaler or force the physical output to match the monitor. Verify both ends.
Are simultaneous HDMI and SDI outputs independent confidence feeds?
Only when documented routing and source content provide the requested images. Two connectors can share a signal; a converter does not create presenter notes.
What should I test when changing laptops causes a dropout?
Record input format, output status and monitor recovery time for each laptop. Rehearse unplugging and reconnecting; a fixed output format does not guarantee a blackout-free change.
