Tower Theater Miami: audio, lighting and screens in Stage 1 and Stage 2

Before planning a show or screening at Tower Theater, identify whether the installation is for Stage 1 or Stage 2. Published connections, mixers, screens and access differ and must be checked against the technical document accepted for the event date.

Which room and technical-document version apply?

Tower Theater Miami is at 1508 SW 8th Street, City of Miami, Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is distinct from Tower Theatre venues in other cities and from Manuel Artime Theater.

The municipal specification identifies the rooms below. Miami Dade College announced it would assume responsibility for the venue on November 1, 2026 and review its systems. For that date or later, confirm responsibility, availability and the applicable technical documents; the announcement does not establish that equipment has already been replaced.

Drop-down screen, on request to administration26 ft × 18 ft, downstage.20 ft × 9 ft, upstage.
Access and supportStairs, mobile staircase and stage lift; 3 small backstage entrances.Mobile staircase; quick-change room at stage right.
Dressing roomsUpstairs: 6–8 people; downstairs: 4–6; both stairs-only.Separate dressing room: maximum 6 people.

The expressions 32L × 14W and 26L × 14W have no explicit unit in that specification: verify the plan before sizing scenery. A stage lift does not provide access to stairs-only dressing rooms. Confirm lift dimensions, load and operation rather than inferring them from the list.

What audio is listed for each room?

Separate mixer, room connections and requested equipment in the patch. The labels 16 IN / 8 OUT and 6 IN / 4 OUT identify neither connectors, physical points, routing nor simultaneous availability. Have them marked on the plan and signal list before connecting.

Microphones and stands6 Shure ambient overheads; 4 handhelds, 4 wireless headsets and 4 stands.3 Shure handhelds and 3 stands.

The inventory does not identify receiver models, RF bands, capsules, amplifiers or speaker models. Do not assume every handheld is wireless or Stage 1 equipment is available in Stage 2. Confirm the exact Mackie 1202-VLZ variant before defining controls or connections from its manual.

How can an input be checked without changing room routing?

As a check to perform with the operator, prepare a known signal and verify the source, cable, agreed connection and assigned channel one at a time. First observe whether level reaches the mixer with room output controlled by the technician; then check the agreed destination. Signal at a channel with no sound from a speaker points toward checking the output path, without proving a speaker fault.

If no signal reaches the channel, compare a known source and cable at the same accepted connection. If replacing the cable restores signal, continue checking that path; if only one input fails, request an assignment check. Do not load an unrelated scene or change the overall patch to solve a single input.

Stage 1 overheads are listed for ambience and general capture. Do not automatically assign them to lead speech. For wireless headsets, identify receiver, transmitter and band before RF coordination. Record changes with the operator and return to the agreed room patch and file after the event.

What should be verified for lights, curtain and screens?

Stage 1 names its control as GRAMMA; Stage 2 only states ETC. Confirm manufacturer, model, version and room file before preparing an external console. Do not turn GRAMMA into a specific grandMA generation or assume an ETC family.

Request a position-by-position lighting check with the operator, keeping the room file as backup. If one group responds and another does not, compare physical location with the accepted patch before changing addresses or modes. The description 6-in-1 alone does not define DMX personality, channel count or preset compatibility.

Stage 1 lists 11 ft from its American curtain to the stage front. Coordinate curtain and screen travel to avoid interference with people or equipment. The manual American curtain must not be treated as a fire curtain. Request the screen through administration; the listing confirms neither projector, lens, playback format nor video input.

Can LED, extra power or effects be added?

Stage 1 lists a truss height of 28 ft above the stage without allowable loads, approved points or residual capacity. Submit total weight including cables and hardware, dimensions, location, reactions and installation method for review. Do not infer load availability from height or installed inventory.

For ground-supported equipment, obtain floor-load limits, stability review, surface protection and accepted routes. The specification does not state voltage, phases, circuits, temporary power capacity or authorized connection provider: confirm distribution and responsibility before sizing the supply.

It also establishes no authorization for lasers, haze, smoke or pyrotechnics. Identify the exact unit, operator and scope; keep fire detection active and prepare a particle-free alternative. Without the manual and accepted procedure, do not proceed with settings, emission or physical effect tests.

What must be approved, and how should the room be reinstated?

Separate permits or inspections by the competent City of Miami authority, venue technical acceptance, organizer scope, contractual conditions and preparation recommendations. A booking or published inventory does not replace applicable approvals.

Agree unloading, doors, dimensions, installation, rehearsal and removal in writing; who installs, connects, operates and removes; insurance, staffing, costs and any exclusive service. The available pages establish no universal lead time, rate or union arrangement for this installation. Obtain the current conditions for the room and date.

If room, location, weight, connection or effect changes, retain the accepted revision and submit the difference for renewed review before implementation. Agree reinstatement of patch, lighting file, curtain and screen with the operator and check clear access and equipment removal at handover. The worksheet records that acceptance; it is not a permit.

Frequently asked questions

Are 16 IN / 8 OUT the Midas M32 Live limit?

The specification lists them as a Stage 1 audio reference without defining the connections represented. Do not turn them into the mixer’s total specification. Obtain the physical patch, assignments and destinations available for the event.

Can Stage 2 use the headsets listed for Stage 1?

They are not listed as Stage 2 inventory. Confirm availability, receivers, transmitters and band; adding them may require a different patch and RF coordination.

Are GRAMMA and ETC enough to prepare a lighting file?

They do not identify model, version or fixture personalities. Obtain those details and the room file before preparing or importing a show.

Does truss height authorize a suspended LED screen?

No. Loads, points, reactions and accepted method still need confirmation. Submit the complete equipment for review before installation; ground-supported equipment also requires floor and stability checks.

Does the drop-down screen include a projector and HDMI input?

The specification only identifies the screen and the request to administration. Confirm projector, lens, playback, input and operator. Prepare a sample and backup once the signal chain is defined.

Does the municipal specification guarantee the same equipment after transfer to MDC?

No. Confirm responsibility and the applicable rider for the announced transition and later dates. Retain the inventory as a reference and do not present announced improvements as installed equipment.
