Questions and troubleshooting
Can I use an ATEM Mini Pro as a webcam and record to an SSD at the same time through a USB hub?
The ATEM Mini Pro has one USB-C port. Use it for the computer's webcam connection or for the recording drive; a hub does not provide a second independent port for both jobs. To record to an SSD while operating ATEM Software Control from a computer, connect the control path over Ethernet, as described in the manual.
- First decide what each destination needs to receive. If Zoom or OBS needs the webcam feed, connect USB-C to the computer and select Blackmagic Design as the camera and, where needed, the microphone. Check picture and sound in the application before the session. Recording in that application is a separate path: check its settings and the resulting file as well.
- If recording the program to SSD takes priority, connect the drive to USB-C and check that it is ready in Record. For control, connect the ATEM and computer to a configured network, identify the ATEM's actual address and open ATEM Software Control. The Pro supports DHCP; do not copy the fixed IP address from a tutorial for the original ATEM Mini. Save the network settings before changing them.
- Check control and recording separately: the panel must respond, and the drive must record. Ethernet control does not make a webcam appear in Zoom. The manufacturer also supports direct Ethernet streaming while recording over USB. Test the connection at the selected quality and check reception at the remote destination.
- If you need SSD recording and a webcam feed for the platform at the same time, consider a separate HDMI capture device after checking its model, supported formats and manual. The Mini Pro has only one HDMI output: if it is set to multiview, that is what the capture device receives. To send clean program, select Program under Output in ATEM Software Control and check the receiving device. There is no second independent HDMI output left for multiview.
- Check the model label before planning the recording. Mini Pro records the program in H.264; it does not record the isolated inputs or editing project provided by Pro ISO. It does not have the Extreme's two USB ports either. Identify the stand and monitor separately when preparing the setup.
My ATEM Mini Pro shows little SSD recording time. How should I choose quality and check the drive for a concert?
Read the units on the remaining-time display and check free space and Quality before reducing quality. Do not mistake hours for minutes or treat the counter as a guaranteed recording duration. The drive still needs a test with the intended profile and recording length.
In ATEM Software Control, Quality affects both streaming and program recording. The manual suggests the HyperDeck profiles when higher-quality recording is needed. If you stream at the same time, the connection must also sustain the chosen profile. The table below gives the documented data rates and their relationship to frame rate.
- Note the exact SSD model, ATEM firmware, free space, production format and planned duration. Under Record, check Drives, the drive name and remaining time against the connected device. The counter that advances during REC shows elapsed recording time, not remaining capacity. If the figures do not match, check the units and selected drive.
- Prepare an HFS+ or exFAT drive, following the manual and considering which computers need to read it. Formatting erases its contents: back up the data first and verify that you selected the correct device. A brand name or advertised speed does not establish that the drive can sustain this recording.
- Select Quality and check the available time again. For planning, two hours at a constant 70 Mb/s equals 63 decimal GB; at 45 Mb/s, it equals 40.5 GB. These figures exclude other data, filesystem overhead and operating margin. Estimated capacity and sustained write performance are separate checks.
- The drive indicator is green when the disk is ready and red during recording. According to the manual, a slowly flashing red REC button means low disk space; rapid red flashing means poor drive performance and skipped frames. Stop the test, record what happened and check the drive, cable and profile before repeating it. Resolve this before the event.
- Run a recording at the actual format and quality, through the intended signal path, for the required duration. After STOP, open the file and check the beginning, middle and end for picture and sound. Note its duration, interruptions and any messages. REC and a running counter alone do not establish that the file is intact. If the test fails, change one variable and repeat it.
Program quality and data rates
| Quality | Lower rate | Higher rate |
|---|---|---|
| HyperDeck High | 45 Mb/s | 70 Mb/s |
| HyperDeck Medium | 25 Mb/s | 45 Mb/s |
| HyperDeck Low | 12 Mb/s | 20 Mb/s |
| Streaming High | 6 Mb/s | 9 Mb/s |
| Streaming Medium | 4.5 Mb/s | 7 Mb/s |
| Streaming Low | 3 Mb/s | 4.5 Mb/s |
Test before the event
Record whether USB is feeding a webcam connection or an SSD, and identify the separate control, recording and streaming paths. Save the initial setup before changing connections.
Use the blank worksheet to record the setup's results: duration, file checks, indicators and one change per test.
