Questions and troubleshooting
A bank of eight channels on the Midas M32 has no signal. What should I check before replacing cables?
Check the source assigned to the bank, then the source of each channel. In the manual edition cited here, ROUTING > home selects blocks of eight Local, AES50-A, AES50-B or Card inputs. HOME > config selects the individual channel source. A cable connected to the expected port does not confirm that the rest of this path is correct.
- Save the scene and capture the patch. Record the firmware, affected bank and path from the physical socket. Make changes outside the live program, with PA, monitor and recording destinations under control. Changing one bank can replace eight sources at once.
- On the M32 itself, open ROUTING and check the affected input block. Local refers to console inputs; AES50-A/B to the named port; Card to returns from the expansion card. Compare the selection with the intended patch. In the manual edition cited here, turn the bank’s encoder to select the source, then press it to apply the assignment. Do not change a bank to Card in an attempt to restore a stage input.
- Select a channel with SEL and open HOME > config. Check that Source matches the bank and source channel you intend to hear. If the input has been reassigned, the fader number alone does not identify the physical socket. Check the signal on METERS > channel.
- Reserve an unused bank and test a known source and cable at a local input, with gain appropriate to that source. Assign the corresponding Local block and source to the test channel. If local signal appears but disappears when you restore the intended AES50 route, trace the port, synchronization and send from the upstream console using its exact model and manual. If there is no local signal either, check the socket, preamp and assignment before blaming the link.
- If the channel receives signal but the destination does not, follow processing, mute, level and mix send, then the physical output. Restore the test bank's original patch and check the event sources. If your firmware has different menus, identify the version before using these names: this guide does not cover User In or the Record/Play selector in later versions.
The M32 receives all 32 channels, but USB recording only gets 1–16. How do I trace the missing channels?
Follow the send to the card, not just the mix inputs. ROUTING > card out determines the signals sent for recording; selecting Card as a channel source handles the return path. This procedure applies to a DN32-USB. Identify the installed card before using it.
- Record the card, M32 firmware, operating system and recording software version. Preserve the scene and session. On an M32 with DN32-USB, check SETUP > card: the manual lists 32in/32out and lower-channel-count modes. For this test with 32 channels in both directions, prepare 32in/32out before the rehearsal; changing the interface mode may require the software to reopen the device.
- In ROUTING > card out, check all four blocks: 1–8, 9–16, 17–24 and 25–32. Turn the corresponding encoder to select the source, then press it to apply the assignment; check each of encoders 1–4. If the sources to record arrive through AES50-A in that order, the example assignments are AES50-A 1–8, 9–16, 17–24 and 25–32 respectively. For Local inputs or another order, follow the documented patch. This records those sources; it does not imply channel outputs with EQ, fader and mute applied.
- In the recording software, confirm the selected interface is the identified card and each track uses the intended input. If 17–32 are unavailable, check interface mode, device selection and the software's input configuration. If they are available but their meters do not move, compare the source sent in Card Out. Use the menus for the installed recording software version.
- Record one identifiable source at a time at the start of each block: 1, 9, 17 and 25. Check the meter, track and recorded file. If it reaches a different track, correct the mapping. If it does not arrive, identify the last point with signal and check the next stage without rebuilding the entire scene. Then verify all 32 required channels and restore changes that did not help.
- If the M32 already receives all 32 sources through AES50-A, adding a cable to AES50-B does not change Card Out. Do not connect a second link without defining its ports, clock and purpose. If another card is installed, stop the USB-specific part of this procedure and consult that card's documentation.
Where to look for a break in the signal path
| What you observe | What to inspect | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Eight inputs missing | Bank in ROUTING and Source in HOME > config | Compare physical source and channel; test locally in an unused bank |
| Signal at monitors, not at front of house | Send and receive patch; port and synchronization | Identify the upstream console and consult its manual |
| Channels 17–32 unavailable in the software | Card and mode in SETUP > card; audio device | Prepare the interface before recording and check the software version |
| Tracks 17–32 available but silent | Sources of all four Card Out blocks and track inputs | Record identifiable sources and locate the interruption |
Checks before the event
Reserve a test scene and recording session. Trace physical source → input bank → channel Source, and separately source → Card Out → software input → track.
The worksheet is blank. Note one change per test, the meter that showed signal and the file recorded. Finish by checking the approved event patch.

Confirm which expansion card and firmware are installed before applying the recording procedure.
The controls cited belong to the official standard M32 manual. Do not transfer settings from M32R, M32C, M32 LIVE, X32 or DL16 without checking their documentation. Match later menus and the installed card to their own version before changing settings.
Check the local patch and recording during rehearsal, using one identifiable source at a time.
