Questions and troubleshooting
Ace XL: the camera drops or returns to center when tilted. How should I set counterbalance?
Check the complete rig, plate position and counterbalance before choosing movement resistance. Identify the head first: these steps apply to the Ace XL S2150-0004, manual S2150-4991/3. The system reference 1018MS alone does not identify the revision of the installed head.
This Ace XL is rated for 2β8 kg at a center-of-gravity height of 55 mm, with eight counterbalance steps. The Ace XL MS 1018 system document agrees. Keep the height condition in mind: placing a monitor, battery or other accessories higher changes the rig you need to check. The S2170-0001 has a different specification; do not use its values for the S2150-0004.
- Identify the head, legs, plate and accessories. Fit the camera, lens, battery, monitor and cables as they will be used, and measure the actual weight. If the label is missing or the rig does not match the manual, confirm the identification before applying its values.
- To level the head, lock the pan and tilt brakes. Loosen the bowl clamp, center the bubble and tighten the clamp again. Hold the camera while mounting it: the plate slides in from the rear and must engage the safety button and be secured with its clamping screw. Use the supplied camera screws and locating pin as appropriate for the camera.
- On the S2150-0004, lock the tilt brake and set vertical drag and counterbalance to 1. Hold the pan bar, release the brake and adjust counterbalance. Slowly tilt forward and backward through horizontal to engage the spring. Check whether the camera holds its position without needing hand pressure to compensate, while keeping control of the rig.
- If the camera falls forward, lock the brake and move the camera backward; if it falls backward, move it forward. Secure the plate before repeating. If it returns to center or you cannot find a usable setting, record the movement and rig configuration for a compatibility check with support. Do not add improvised weights or use the brake to mask the symptom.
- Repeat the check after changing the lens, battery or monitor position. Lock both brakes during a pause with the camera mounted. Remove the camera before transporting the tripod; do not lift the assembly by the pan bar.
Ace XL: a pan or tilt starts with a jerk on a tight shot. What should I check?
Check that the brakes are released for movement and that the drag ring is engaged at a setting. The Ace XL S2150-0004 has three drag levels per axis; 0 disengages drag. Brakes lock the head: the manual says not to use them to create resistance.
To engage the mechanism, turn the ring to the chosen setting while slowly moving the head on that axis. If you also want to compare image-stabilization settings, identify the camera and lens and check their manuals before changing them.
- Hold the pan bar and check balance as described above. Release the brake on the axis you intend to move, select a drag setting and move slowly until it engages. If the ring remains between marks or the selector jams, do not force it. Record the position and contact service.
- Before going on air, record the start, travel and stop from the planned camera position using the tightest shot required. Keep focal length and operating speed the same when comparing drag settings. Watch whether the jump coincides with your movement, focus, zoom or a cable pulling on the rig.
- If the image also shakes with the head stationary, check the support, platform and nearby foot traffic separately. Platform vibration and a jump at the start of a pan need different tests. The image alone does not identify a faulty internal part.
- If tracking is still unusable, agree a fixed shot or cover from another camera with the director while assessing suitable support. Refer a defective head to Sachtler service. Do not open it or treat increased drag as a confirmed repair.
Separate balance, movement and support
| Observation | What to check | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Falls forward or backward | Plate position and counterbalance according to the head manual | Rig, measured weight, plate position and movement. |
| Returns to center | Head revision and compatibility between load and setting | Angle where it returns and fitted accessories. |
| Jump at the start of a pan or tilt | Axis brake released and drag setting engaged | Axis, setting, focal length and recorded start/stop. |
| Vibration on a fixed shot | Support, platform, foot traffic and cable pull | Coinciding activity; keep this check separate from drag. |
Checks before the event
Test with the complete camera rig and the shot the director needs. Enter your observations on the worksheet. If you change an accessory or its position, record that configuration separately before comparing.

Identify the head, its revision and the kit components from their labels. The linked manuals distinguish the MS 1018 system and S2150-0004 head; the Ace XL name alone is not enough to select an adjustment scale.
The general camera guide also covers the Ace XL S2170-0001. Choose the section and manual by head reference: sharing the Ace XL name does not mean the adjustment scales are the same.
For stabilization, third-party plates, different legs or supports, identify the component and its documentation before applying instructions. Head repairs belong with the service department.
