Koubek Center: shared wireless microphones, theater projection and lighting
Before a performance at the Koubek Center theater, confirm the assigned configuration and crew. Handheld and lavalier microphones share receivers; identify the inventory projector separately from the DCP option on the rate sheet.
Which space, dimensions and access routes need confirmation?
Miami Dade College’s Koubek Center is at 2705 SW 3rd Street, Miami, Florida 33135, in Miami-Dade. The theater has its own documentation; do not automatically apply conditions from MDC North, Kendall, the mansion, garden or other spaces at the center.
Separate the center’s acceptance of the use, technical review of the installation, organizer’s rider and contracted services. The institution must identify the competent authorities and permits applicable to the project; a reservation and inventory do not replace structural, electrical or fire reviews. A drawing and an integration check are preparation recommendations, not approvals.
The rider indicates that dressing-room and backstage access involves the audience area. Coordinate loading, equipment movements and case removal before doors open, keeping aisles, exits and accessible positions clear. Request usable route dimensions: the drawing does not certify clearance for every flight case.
| Theater reference | Published information and limit |
|---|---|
| Seats | The theater page and written rider state 195; rider drawings state 194. Confirm the accepted seating plan and ADA arrangement for the performance; do not automatically choose the higher figure. |
| Stage | 25 ft 9 in wide × 19 ft deep, from proscenium to upstage wall. Check curtains, scenery and usable positions before finalizing the stage plot. |
| Level difference | 2 ft 2 in between stage and auditorium. Confirm technical and accessible access; do not infer that a ramp is available. |
| Electric pipe | 16 ft 9 in above the stage floor. This is a geometric height, not a load rating or permission to add hoists, truss, LED or signage. |
The inventory includes Staging Dimensions platforms, but that sheet does not publish floor, support or pipe load ratings. Submit weights, reactions, dimensions and surface protection for competent review before adding a structure.
How many wireless microphones can be used, and how do you identify each link?
The inventory lists 5 Shure GLXD4R receivers, 5 lavaliers with transmitters and 5 Beta 87A wireless handhelds; it states that receivers are shared. The GLXD4R manual allows two transmitters to be linked in a combo system, but only one may be active per receiver. Do not budget for ten simultaneous channels or guarantee operation of all systems without checking actual coordination.
Prepare a receiver → active transmitter → console input → stage-use list. With the operator, identify pairs using Remote ID: a brief LINK press makes the receiver display ID and the linked transmitter flash red/green; another brief press exits identification. Do not hold LINK to identify equipment, because manual linking is a different operation.
Before changing from handheld to lavalier on the same receiver, switch off the outgoing transmitter and use only the compatible, prepared pair. Observe RF and the audio meter: RF off indicates a transmitter that is off or unlinked; flashing RF indicates searching. With RF present but no audio, check transmitter, microphone and level; with receiver audio but nothing at the console, follow the cable, input and patch before relinking everything.
Record initial assignments and settings. If the change is unstable, remove it from the cue and return to the previously accepted link with the technician. For additional simultaneous microphones, agree on compatible extra receivers or wired microphones from the inventory; do not address the shortfall by turning on both transmitters sharing a receiver. These instructions apply to the listed GLXD4R, not the GLXD4R+.
Do CL1 mixing channels equal free physical inputs?
The rider lists a Yamaha CL1 with 48 mono and 8 stereo channels, and a Rio3224-D at Stage Left with 32 analog inputs and 16 analog outputs. Yamaha also specifies 8 AES/EBU outputs for this Rio; these are digital, not eight extra analog outputs. Mixing channels and physical connectors are different quantities.
Request the actual patch, occupied inputs and outputs, sample rate, Dante routing and preamp-control responsibility. Do not apply another theater’s template or change the clock or network to accommodate a visiting file without the operator. The published model is Rio3224-D; D2 or D3 instructions are not substitutes.
As a check to perform, follow an agreed signal from the Rio connector to the CL1 channel and assigned output. If a signal is present at one stage and absent at the next, check that patch segment; if it reaches the console but not the destination, check routing, level and output connection. Save the initial state and restore the accepted configuration if the route cannot be recovered. An available fader does not prove that a connector is free.
How do you check lighting, dimmers and power while preserving the repertory setup?
The inventory includes an ETC Element, grandMA2 Command Wing with computer and a 48-channel ETC Sensor rack. Confirm the active control system, file, version, patch and responsible operator. Before adding cues or fixtures, keep a copy of the current state with the operator. The dimmer list describes positions, not DMX addresses for every fixture.
The published dimmer distribution follows; compare it with the current patch and labels before checking a zone. Do not copy drawing addresses into a new configuration without technical acceptance.
| Dimmers | Area according to the rider |
|---|---|
| 01–12 | Front of House / Second Electric |
| 13–14 | House Left Boom |
| 15–16 | House Right Boom |
| 17–26 | Third Electric |
| 27–36 | Fourth Electric |
| 37–46 | Fifth Electric |
| 47–48 | S/R Wall and USL Wall |
The rider distinguishes fixture modes: Chauvet Ovation E-2 FC at 11 channels, Rogue R2 Wash at 17 channels and ETC Color Source LED at 5 channels. Check the actual model, mode and patch with the operator: incorrect control response may indicate a different assignment or mode rather than a faulty fixture. Check one zone at a time during the agreed window and return to the accepted file if it fails.
For visiting equipment, request voltage, available circuits, connectors, protection, allowable demand and authorized connection personnel. Having 48 dimmer channels does not mean having 48 free AV circuits. Without identifying modules and loads, do not prescribe power changes or connect projectors, computers or LED equipment to dimmed outputs.
Which projector and format does a presentation or film screening require?
The rider lists a 13000-lumen Barco F90-W13 WUXGA projector, front projection and a motorized 16 ft × 10 ft screen at center stage. Barco’s F90-W13 specification confirms a native 1920 × 1200 matrix and 16:10 aspect ratio. The rate sheet adds a separate 6000-lumen Barco DCP option: do not confuse it with the F90 or assume the inventory includes DCP playback.
Confirm the assigned unit, installed lens, server or computer, connection, format, frame rate, audio and contracted service. Delivering a presentation or video file is not equivalent to delivering a DCP; request the chosen system’s requirements before preparing the final copy.
Prepare an image with a border, circle and corner labels for an authorized check. If the file already looks cropped or distorted on the computer, correct the composition and output; if it looks correct there but not on screen, review the signal chain and approved settings with the operator. Do not stretch the image to fill the screen at the expense of its proportions or change lens, position or geometry without authorization.
The F90-W13’s laser-phosphor source describes the projector technology. It does not demonstrate authorization for a laser beam show. Do not add haze, smoke, cold sparks or pyrotechnics because a laser projector is present: each effect needs its own proposal and applicable acceptances, still to be confirmed for the specific installation.
Which costs, crew and handback tasks belong in the scope?
The theater rate sheet separates rental, mandatory services, crew and options. Request a quotation covering setup, checks, performance and removal; do not treat the room rate as the total price. The following published references have no explicit effective date on that page and must be confirmed for the booking.
| Item | Reference and scope |
|---|---|
| Theater, commercial rate | USD 1100 per 8-hour day or one performance; consecutive day USD 550; additional same-day performance USD 275. Confirm how this applies to the schedule. |
| Theater, nonprofit rate | USD 935 per 8-hour day or one performance; consecutive day USD 470; additional performance USD 235. |
| Technician | USD 140 with a 4-hour minimum per day; USD 35 per additional hour. Confirm staffing and hours, not unlimited coverage. |
| Services marked nonoptional | Per performance day: incidentals USD 10, parking/valet USD 180, custodial and security package USD 200. Onsite manager USD 100 per 4-hour performance. The rate sheet exempts rehearsals from the first three charges. |
| Options and other charges | Marley USD 300, labor separate; DCP projector USD 350 per event; mandatory insurance to be determined; processing USD 25 per event. |
Coordinate loading and handback with the center before fixing times; the rider does not publish a universal access window or structural/effects review deadlines. Confirm who accepts each addition and the required documentation. Nor can a general union requirement or technical exclusivity be inferred from the inventory.
If scenery, rigging, supports, power, effects, audience layout or projection changes, issue a revised drawing and scope for the corresponding acceptances. Return only to a previous configuration that remains available and authorized.
The rate sheet requires equipment and stage restoration after the event and prohibits removing Miami Dade College equipment. Document the file, patch, connections and handover condition with the crew, remove agreed additions and check handback. The described checks remain to be performed; they do not evidence physical tests or permits already obtained.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use five handhelds and five lavaliers at the same time?
Do not count ten links: the inventory lists five shared GLXD4R receivers. Shure permits only one active transmitter at a time per combo receiver. Define pairs and simultaneous uses with the technician; agree on additional compatible receivers or wired microphones to expand. Actual availability and coordination still need checking.
What should I check first when a GLXD4R produces no audio?
Identify the pair and observe RF and the meter. RF off or flashing points toward power, battery or linking; RF present does not prove usable audio. If the meter responds but nothing reaches the CL1, check cable, input and patch before relinking. Keep the previous assignment so it can be restored with the operator.
Can I add hoists or a screen to the pipe at 16 ft 9 in?
The published height does not establish load capacity or approved points. Submit equipment, weights, reactions and support method for competent review. The rider does not provide residual pipe or floor capacities. Do not suspend additions merely because the drawing shows installed structure or lighting.
Can I load my lighting file directly?
First confirm the active controller, version, patch, modes and backup with the operator. Element, Command Wing and Sensor are inventory equipment, not an already accepted visiting configuration. Dimmer numbers do not replace DMX addresses and modes. Check an authorized zone and restore the accepted file if response is incorrect.
Does the inventory Barco include DCP screening?
Do not infer this: the rider describes an F90-W13 and the rate sheet offers a separate additional DCP service. Confirm equipment, server, delivery format and cost before producing files. Check image and sound with the operator; a laser light source does not make the installation an authorized laser show.
Does the room rate include technicians and Marley installation?
The rate sheet separates rental, technician, mandatory services and options. The technician has a published four-hour minimum and Marley is listed with labor separate. Build a complete setup, check, performance and removal schedule and request the corresponding crew; the room rate does not establish coverage of all these tasks.
