Truck-to-dock delivery: deck height, ramps and transfer
To choose an unloading method, compare the truck, dock and package including its cart or pallet. Start with photos or an access sketch, then complete the measurements requested by the carrier and venue.
Compare the assigned unit’s deck with the assigned dock
Ask the carrier for deck height under the planned conditions and the venue for the dock and transfer-equipment details. Have both identify the configuration and location involved. Exterior vehicle height and cargo-box interior height are separate values; they do not replace this comparison.
| Identified specification | Published deck height |
|---|---|
| U-Haul 15 ft | 33 in from ground; approximate dimensions and production variants. |
| Penske commercial 22–26 ft, Non-CDL category | Approximately 46–50 in; fleet specifications vary by make, model and year. |
These examples show why actual unit information matters. They do not provide the show’s dock height or authorize a connection to the truck. Also record clear door opening, rear obstructions, package dimensions including its cart, and approved equipment for the unloading point.
If a dockboard, dock plate or leveler is proposed, request its identity, intended use and applicable conditions for the freight and handling equipment together. For dockboards, 29 CFR 1910.26 requires consideration of maximum intended load; the truck’s advertised payload does not settle that review. Selection and authorization belong with the parties supplying and managing the transfer.
If a low-deck truck is proposed for dock delivery, ask whether an approved solution exists for that combination or whether another vehicle or authorized ground-level point with appropriate service is preferable. Do not improvise a bridge or test the crossing with the load to decide suitability.
Ground-level ramp delivery: check equipment, cart and load
A truck loading ramp connects levels with an inclined surface; a liftgate raises a platform. A building’s vehicle ramp is a different installation. For ground-level delivery, identify which solution is proposed and who confirms its use for the project’s packages.
Request ramp make or identification, unit instructions, permitted load under its conditions and usable width between anything that narrows the path. Add the package’s gross weight, dimensions and configuration including cart or pallet jack. Request the cart’s documentation too: its nominal capacity alone does not establish suitability for that ramp.
| Component | Information to gather |
|---|---|
| Ramp and truck | Identification, instructions and unit label or decal; capacity and intended use under manufacturer requirements. |
| Case and cart | Shipping weight and dimensions, wheels and support points; cart manual and intended conditions. |
| Unloading location | Authorized point and conditions for provider and venue review, including surface, available space and obstructions. |
| Labor and service | Who supplies appropriate equipment, confirms compatibility and performs the authorized transfer. |
As a reference, U-Haul truck instructions direct ramp users to the unit decal and warn about contaminated, wet or oily surfaces. A generic specification does not replace those instructions. If identification or capacity information is missing, ask the provider before finalizing that option.
If the case has wheels but its compatibility with the ramp is unconfirmed, compare a truck with a compatible liftgate, an authorized dock delivery or a service equipped for that package. Coordinate the choice with providers; do not solve it by adding people, improvising supports or calculating a universal safe slope.
Liftgate: request usable platform size and unit capacity
To request a truck liftgate quote, send gross package weight and dimensions including its cart, a photo of the support points and the planned delivery location. Request liftgate identification, the matching manual and provider confirmation for that combination. Truck payload and liftgate capacity are separate values.
Maxon’s C2 manual requires compliance with unit capacity and decals, confines freight to the platform and prohibits forklifts on it. This is a reference for that family, not approval for another liftgate.
Ask the provider to include in the quote usable dimensions, permitted loading conditions, compatible handling equipment and who provides the authorized operator. A freight liftgate should not be contracted as a substitute for personnel-lifting equipment. If the combination is unsuitable, request another vehicle or an appropriate transfer service before booking.
Dock plate, dockboard and leveler: identify the offered equipment
Rite-Hite distinguishes portable dock plates for light, non-powered handling, dockboards for heavy machinery, and dock-installed levelers. Request the model: category alone does not establish capacity.
Ask the venue for name and model, capacity and intended-use documentation, the equipment crossing it and confirmation for the assigned vehicle. Also request who supplies, authorizes and manages the transfer. A photo can help identify the device; it does not establish its capacity or permission to use it.
If the quote only says “dock ramp,” clarify the equipment before contracting. Do not substitute sheet metal, lumber or an improvised bridge. The provider and venue must define a solution for the actual combination.
Useful questions
Will a truck advertised as dock height work at any dock?
Request the assigned unit and dock details, transfer equipment and intended packages. The commercial description does not establish compatibility with every installation.
Are case wheels enough to use a loading ramp?
No. Request case/cart, ramp and vehicle information. The provider must confirm intended use, capacity and compatibility at the authorized unloading point.
Can we start the inquiry with photos?
Yes. Send package, cart and access photos, plus date and venue. They help identify which specifications and measurements to request; they do not replace weight information or transfer-equipment confirmation.
Is requesting a truck with a liftgate enough?
Include package weight and dimensions with its cart, usable platform size and liftgate model. The provider must confirm capacity, compatibility and service scope at the delivery point.
Are a dock plate and a dock leveler the same?
They are different equipment. Request identification and documentation for the offered device, plus confirmation of compatibility with the vehicle, freight and handling equipment.
