Questions and troubleshooting

The external monitor goes black when I start 4K recording on a PXW-Z150. Which setting should I check?

When recording XAVC QFHD, check QFHD REC OUTPUT. VF/LCD PANEL sends the recording image to the camera's viewfinder and LCD. To send it to an external device, select EXTERNAL OUTPUT. In that setting, the image being recorded is no longer displayed in the viewfinder or on the camera's LCD. Set up and check external monitoring before using this mode during the event.

  1. Note FILE FORMAT, REC FORMAT, the selected output and the firmware version. Find the version under OTHERS → VERSION DISPLAY. QFHD REC OUTPUT applies when FILE FORMAT is XAVC QFHD; it does not explain every loss of output during HD recording.
  2. Open MENU → REC/OUT SET → VIDEO OUT → OUTPUT SELECT. Under OUTPUT SELECT, choose the connector used by the setup: SDI, HDMI or VIDEO. Then open QFHD REC OUTPUT and select EXTERNAL OUTPUT. These video outputs do not operate simultaneously. Connecting both an SDI cable and an HDMI cable does not provide two independent feeds.
  3. Check the monitor or switcher's supported formats against the output table. With that device connected, test STBY → REC → STOP: watch for uninterrupted moving picture and audio, then open the recorded clip. Losing the recording image on the camera's LCD can be expected with external output selected; the camera operator needs a working view for framing. If the external device still goes black, check the output format, cable and a compatible monitor, changing one variable at a time.
  4. Check the other active functions before keeping this setting. The manual warns that recording to media while streaming can send the image back to VF/LCD PANEL. The Ver.2.00 supplement also limits external QFHD monitoring in Network Client Mode. Proxy recording is not supported with external output during XAVC QFHD recording. Check the exact operating mode before planning to combine streaming, proxies and external monitoring.
I record 25p on the PXW-Z150, but the HDMI monitor receives 50p. Is the camera set incorrectly?

That can be normal. With the camera set to the 50i system, XAVC QFHD 2160/25p recording and SDI/HDMI set to 1080p/576i, Sony's table specifies HDMI 1080/50p. Changing 25p OUTPUT between 25p, 25PsF and 50p(Pull Down) changes the SDI output for that configuration; HDMI stays at 1080/50p. The recording format and the external signal format are separate settings to verify.

  1. Start with OTHERS → 60i/50i SEL, FILE FORMAT and REC FORMAT. Then check REC/OUT SET → VIDEO OUT → SDI/HDMI and 25p OUTPUT. The table on this page covers XAVC QFHD 2160/25p in the 50i system only. For other recording formats, use their corresponding rows in the Operating Guide.
  2. If the receiving device needs 1080p25, SDI can provide it with 25p OUTPUT set to 25p in the configurations shown. That setting does not change HDMI to 25p. If the receiving input must be HDMI at 25p, choose an appropriate converter or output using the exact product's documentation, then test the complete chain. A connector adapter does not necessarily convert frame rate.
  3. With 25p OUTPUT set to 25PsF, the SDI output is 1080/25PsF. If it feeds the SDI input of a Pyro S transmitter, the Pyro S guide lists 1080i50 at the receiver outputs. Seeing 50i there is not by itself a fault: check the format change in the wireless link. It is also different from the Sony's direct HDMI 1080/50p output.
  4. Compare the direct camera output, receiver output and switcher input using the same scene. Record resolution, frame rate and p/i/PsF at each point, and check movement and audio. Confirm that the receiving device accepts the signal before changing the production format. For an ATEM Mini Pro, also follow its guide and test the actual combination.

Test the setup before the event

Record the starting configuration and check STBY, REC and STOP separately. Seeing an image before recording does not establish that the output stays active during REC.

Technical documentation

Confirm the tripod, monitor and remote-control models, their connections and the required monitoring arrangement. Availability is checked for the event date.

Before the test, identify the camera firmware, active network and proxy functions, receiving device and accessories. Keep a record of the starting configuration so you can restore it.
